Anima eterna (Programme 4)
An airy feeling over a sea of sadness are words that come to mind listening to Schubert's Great C Major Symphony as performed by Anima eterna. The period instrument orchestra's founder and conductor Jos van Immerseel described the secret of his orchestras alchemy in an interview with DW, saying, "The people play as though they're in a chamber group. They feel responsible for what they're doing. And they're very mutually supportive." Anima eterna, a publically funded private institution, works with freelance musicians who are selected depending, says Immerseel, "on how good they play - but also according to their philosophy when it comes to performing on historic instruments. Some are instrument makers themselves. I invite them to join us as the occasion calls for. We use different musicians for a Haydn symphony than we do when we play Orff or Janacek. Nobody is under contract. Each plays for his life and his passion." Beethovenfest director Nike Wagner describes this hour's performance thus: "I was even elevated. It really went down to a very deep understanding of Schubert."
